Bare-Board Electrical Testing: Scope and Evidence

Define PCB continuity and isolation testing, reference data, test method and lot records before fabrication.

Bare-board electrical testing checks the manufactured interconnections against the intended connectivity. It can detect conditions such as opens and shorts within the implemented test coverage. It does not establish the function of the later populated circuit or replace dimensional and material verification.

Use an authoritative reference

Agree which released netlist or design data defines the intended connections. If a netlist is independently compared with manufacturing artwork, document how differences are resolved. Testing against incorrectly interpreted data can confirm the wrong connectivity consistently.

Choose a practical test approach

Flying-probe and fixture-based methods have different setup and throughput characteristics. Select a method around board geometry, access and quantity. Ask what is tested and at which limits rather than comparing only the equipment name.

Specify the required record

Define board or lot identification, pass/fail handling and any report to be supplied. State whether special resistance, isolation or other requirements apply and obtain confirmation that the proposed equipment and program support them. Keep accepted deviations traceable.

Understand what still needs another check

A continuity test does not demonstrate controlled impedance, correct laminate identity, assembly workmanship or functional behavior. Use the applicable inspection, coupon and assembled-board tests to cover those requirements. Build a coverage plan that shows which evidence answers each question.

Release checklist

  • Identify the authoritative connectivity reference.
  • Agree method, limits and coverage.
  • Define failure disposition and traceable records.
  • Keep electrical test separate from functional qualification.
