BOM Preparation for PCB Assembly

Create a clear bill of materials with exact part numbers, population options and controlled alternatives.

Keep a machine-readable structure

Use one row per distinct fitted part and population option. Include reference designators, quantity per board, manufacturer, full part number, value or description and package. Avoid merged cells and information hidden only by formatting.

Resolve population conflicts

Do-not-populate references must agree with the assembly drawing and placement data. Separate variants explicitly rather than relying on a note that can be lost during purchasing or setup.

Review procurement exceptions

Identify lifecycle status, critical shortages and proposed alternatives. Keep suggested substitutions separate from approved ones, and document any electrical or mechanical review needed before approval.

Prepare the review package

  • Reference designators and quantity per board
  • Manufacturer and exact orderable part number
  • Package and population variant
  • Approved alternate and approval record
