Define success before design
Write the required functions, interfaces, power budget, size constraints and measurable acceptance criteria. Separate essential prototype objectives from features that can wait for a later iteration.
Build a consistent design package
The schematic establishes connectivity; the BOM establishes the fitted components; the layout establishes the physical implementation. Review those three views together before generating manufacturing outputs.
Use the prototype to answer questions
Prepare the bring-up plan before the boards arrive. Record measured results, hardware changes and firmware revisions. Feed the findings into a controlled revision rather than an undocumented collection of fixes.
Prepare the review package
- Functional requirements and block diagram
- Mechanical constraints and interfaces
- Component choices and availability
- Prototype test plan and revision log
