A test coupon is a dedicated structure used to evaluate a manufacturing or electrical characteristic. Coupons are often placed on a production panel so selected tests can be performed without consuming a delivered board. Their value depends on how well they represent the feature and process being accepted.
Start with the measurement objective
A coupon for impedance, an interconnect assessment and a dimensional process check serve different purposes. Identify the requirement first, then select the structure and method. A coupon name alone does not establish which acceptance criteria were measured.
Match relevant production features
Review layers, materials, copper geometry, via spans and process exposure as applicable. A convenient coupon that omits the difficult structure may not support the intended conclusion. Agree the design and placement with the fabricator before the production panel is finalized.
Define sampling and interpretation
State which panels or lots are represented, how the coupon is identified and what limits apply. Specify the measurement method and report format. If a result fails, define whether the associated product is held and who evaluates the disposition.
Keep conclusions within the evidence
A passing impedance coupon supports the tested structure and process conditions. It does not prove the behavior of every connector launch or the function of the assembled product. Combine coupon evidence with the other tests required by the design.
Release checklist
- Name the characteristic and governing requirement.
- Approve representative geometry and process exposure.
- Define sampling, identification and reporting.
- Specify product disposition for failed or ambiguous results.
