RF and Microwave PCB Design Guide

Review RF board stack-up, transmission structures, connector launches, shielding and verification before fabrication.

An RF board is an interconnect system: the trace, reference conductor, dielectric, component pads and connector launch all influence the result. Begin with a frequency range and a channel budget, then decide which dimensions and materials must remain controlled through fabrication. A nominal impedance value alone does not describe insertion loss, phase stability or unwanted coupling.

Define the channel boundaries

Write down the source and load reference planes, operating band, allowable loss, return-loss objective and phase requirements. Include cables and connectors when they belong to the delivered system. Decide where calibration or de-embedding will remove fixtures from a measurement, so simulation and bench results describe the same channel.

Choose a construction that can be reproduced

Compare candidate laminate and bonding systems using frequency-dependent data and their stated measurement methods. Agree the copper foil, dielectric thickness and solder-mask treatment. Substituting another material with a similar headline dielectric constant can still change loss or phase. Record approved alternatives together with the evidence needed to accept them.

Review discontinuities before long routes

Model the connector footprint, pad transitions, vias and changes in reference geometry. A short launch with an abrupt field change can dominate a much longer uniform trace. Keep matching networks accessible during development and reserve space for realistic component footprints rather than ideal lumped elements.

Connect the enclosure to the layout review

Shield walls, mounting screws, thermal interfaces and cable entry points can change current paths. Review the mechanical assembly with the RF layout. Specify the intended ground contacts and any keepout around radiating structures before the enclosure is finalized.

A practical review exercise

For a connector-to-amplifier route, divide the model into the input connector, launch, uniform line and device pad. Compare the complete channel with the uniform-line model. If the launch dominates reflection, changing only the laminate will not fix the channel. Save both models and the measurement setup as part of the design evidence.

Design review checklist

  • State the operating band and measurement reference planes.
  • Identify controlled RF layers and mask openings.
  • Approve the connector footprint against its actual mechanical drawing.
  • Specify coupons, acceptance limits and reports in the order.
