Select a high-speed material against a channel budget, not a marketing category. Route length, frequency content, connector loss and receiver capability determine how much margin the board needs. A short link may be constrained by launches and vias while a longer link becomes more sensitive to distributed conductor and dielectric loss.
Start with the channel requirement
Record the relevant frequency range, insertion-loss allowance, impedance target and delay constraints. Allocate a realistic share to the PCB after accounting for packages, connectors and cables. Keep the assumptions visible so a later connector or route change triggers a material review when necessary.
Read dielectric data with its conditions
Published dielectric constant and loss values depend on frequency and measurement method. Rogers distinguishes design-oriented dielectric data from other measurements and identifies the test conditions in its selection information. Preserve those conditions in the material comparison instead of copying a single number into every model.
Specify more than the resin family
Copper profile, glass construction, resin content and layer spacing can affect the result. Ask the fabricator which construction and foil will actually be supplied. An approved alternate should be evaluated as a complete construction, particularly when the electrical margin is small.
Correlate models with useful coupons
Define what the coupon should measure and how it relates to production routing. Impedance verification alone does not measure every part of a channel-loss budget. Agree the measurement method and reporting format, then compare the result with the assumptions used in the channel model.
Example: material versus geometry
Compare two channel models using the same connector and via transitions while changing only the board construction. Then compare a geometry improvement using the original material. This separates the value of the material change from the value of reducing route length or improving a launch, making the purchasing decision easier to justify.
Design review checklist
- Document the channel-loss allocation.
- Keep frequency and test-method labels with material data.
- Confirm foil and bonding-layer availability.
- Approve alternatives using the same channel criteria.
