OSP PCB Surface Finish: Assembly and Handling

Plan organic solderability preservative with controlled storage, handling, thermal exposure and assembly requirements.

Organic solderability preservative, or OSP, protects designated copper surfaces with an organic coating. It should be selected as part of the assembly process and storage plan. A favorable bare-board price is useful only when the finish supports the actual handling, soldering sequence and acceptance requirements.

Match the finish to the process sequence

List the planned soldering operations, any intermediate storage and the surfaces that must remain solderable at each step. Ask for the qualified thermal and handling conditions of the proposed OSP process. Do not assume one universal number of reflow cycles for every formulation and assembly.

Protect the surface before assembly

Use the agreed packaging, storage and handling practices to limit contamination and exposure. Track the time and conditions between receipt, opening and assembly. If those conditions are exceeded, assess suitability through the defined process instead of relying only on visual appearance.

Review test and contact requirements

Identify pads used for probing or contact as well as pads used for soldering. Confirm that the selected surface and test method are compatible. Repeated mating or a special contact requirement may need a different defined finish on the affected area.

Document the release and acceptance plan

Specify the finish clearly, including the required governing specification and verification where applicable. Coordinate any cleaning or rework operations with the assembly provider. Record the actual finish process used so a repeat order can reproduce the qualified route.

Release checklist

  • Define soldering operations and intermediate storage.
  • Confirm packaging and allowable handling conditions.
  • Review test-pad and contact compatibility.
  • Keep finish approval with the assembly process record.
