PCB Surface Layers and Assembly Readiness

Distinguish copper finish, solder mask, paste data and markings when preparing a PCB for assembly.

Several outer-surface features serve different purposes. Exposed copper receives a selected finish; solder mask covers designated areas; paste data defines stencil apertures; markings communicate identification and orientation. Review their interaction instead of treating the board surface as one decorative layer.

Finish and solder mask have different jobs

The finish supports the intended soldered, bonded or contact connection. Solder mask controls exposed areas and separates features where the process permits. A mask opening does not specify the finish, and a finish note does not define which pads or vias should remain exposed.

Paste data controls solder deposition

Stencil openings are derived from paste information, not from a photograph of the copper. Exposed pads and fine-pitch packages may need tailored aperture designs. Keep that decision aligned with component guidance and the assembly process rather than assuming every copper pad receives an identical opening.

Markings must remain readable and out of the way

Reference designators and polarity indicators are useful only if they survive clipping and remain visible after assembly where needed. Keep them away from solderable surfaces and other controlled contact regions. Review the actual exported markings against the mask openings.

Handling affects the finished result

Protect solderable and contact surfaces during storage, shipment and assembly. Specify packaging and handling appropriate to the finish and schedule. If a board has been exposed or stored beyond the agreed conditions, request a suitability review rather than assuming its appearance proves solderability.

Release checklist

  • Specify finish and exposed regions separately.
  • Review mask and paste data independently.
  • Check polarity and revision markings after export.
  • Agree packaging and storage conditions.
