PCB File Formats: What Each Deliverable Communicates

Compare fabrication artwork, drill data, IPC-2581, ODB++, BOM and placement files by their manufacturing purpose.

Choose a release format by the information the receiving process needs. File extensions do not prove that a package is complete. Agree the accepted formats with the fabricator and assembler, then inspect the actual exported content and keep its revision traceable.

Layer artwork and drill data

Gerber outputs describe layer features. Drill and routing data communicate holes and mechanical operations, while a drawing adds construction, tolerances and acceptance notes. Use explicit layer names and units. Check that the outline and plated or non-plated features are represented consistently across the package.

Structured manufacturing packages

IPC-2581 and ODB++ can carry structured manufacturing information beyond separate artwork layers. Their usefulness depends on the exporter settings and the receiver’s supported import workflow. Ask which information is actually consumed and validate a sample transfer when the workflow is new.

Assembly-specific information

A BOM identifies the purchased and fitted parts. Position data identifies component locations, side and orientation. Assembly drawings communicate polarity, special placement and mechanical details. One file type does not eliminate the need to review these meanings and conventions.

Independent checking after export

Open generated outputs in a suitable viewer and compare outline, copper, holes, mask and component references with the approved design. Inspect both top and bottom interpretation. Save a manifest so the recipient can tell which files are current and which are reference-only.

Release checklist

  • Agree file formats and exporter settings with the receiver.
  • Include units, layer mapping and revision identifiers.
  • Inspect generated outputs before sending them.
  • Keep reference-only material clearly labeled.
