IPC Standards: A PCB Procurement Reference

Distinguish PCB design, bare-board performance, assembly process and workmanship standards in a purchase specification.

A standards reference is useful only when it identifies the correct scope, revision and acceptance class. Bare-board fabrication, soldering processes and assembled-board inspection involve different documents. This guide helps organize a specification; the controlling requirements remain the agreed editions of the actual standards and the purchase documents.

Match each document to its job

IPC-6012 concerns qualification and performance of rigid printed boards, while IPC-A-600 addresses printed-board acceptability. J-STD-001 covers requirements for soldered electrical and electronic assemblies, and IPC-A-610 addresses assembly acceptability. Check the official document descriptions and applicability before selecting a set.

Name revisions and applicable addenda

Avoid an undated instruction such as build to IPC when the purchase requires a particular acceptance basis. Record the edition, class, applicable addendum and any agreed exceptions. Resolve contradictions between the drawing, purchase order and quality agreement before production begins.

Translate requirements into deliverables

State which inspection results, test reports, material records and certificates must accompany the order. Identify whether the evidence applies to a lot, panel, coupon or individual assembly. A generic certificate should not replace a specifically required measurement report.

Keep training, certification and product conformity distinct

An individual training credential, a supplier quality-system certificate and a product acceptance statement serve different purposes. Ask what each document covers and whether it applies to the manufacturing site and process used for the order. Do not infer product conformity from a logo alone.

Example: a clear order matrix

Use separate rows for bare-board requirements, assembly process, workmanship acceptance and product-specific tests. Give each row its controlling document and revision, acceptance class where applicable, required record and approver. This makes a missing requirement visible before it becomes a receiving dispute.

Design review checklist

  • Identify the scope and edition of every specified standard.
  • Resolve document precedence and exceptions.
  • Define evidence and retention requirements.
  • Verify supplier claims against the actual order scope.
