IPC Class 3 PCB Design and Procurement Guide

Plan Class 3 board requirements, supplier review, manufacturing evidence and acceptance without relying on a generic quality label.

Class 3 is an acceptance classification within applicable IPC requirements, not a promise that a product can never fail. Start with the product environment and governing requirements, then specify the correct document, edition and class. Board design, manufacturing process and delivered evidence must support the same acceptance basis.

Establish the applicable requirement set

Identify whether the scope covers bare boards, assemblies or both, and whether a sector-specific addendum applies. Record requirements explicitly rather than carrying over a class note from an earlier project. The contract should define how conflicts and exceptions are resolved.

Review manufacturability before release

Have the intended supplier review the actual stack-up, via structures, copper features and acceptance requirements. A design rule that worked for another construction may leave insufficient process margin here. Resolve exceptions before tooling rather than asking inspection to compensate for an unsuitable design.

Request relevant evidence

Agree the inspection and test records required for the lot and the acceptance criteria they demonstrate. Ask how nonconformances, rework and proposed process changes are approved. Keep material and process traceability proportional to the product and contractual requirements.

Validate the product beyond workmanship

Workmanship acceptance does not establish that the electrical design, thermal behavior or environmental lifetime meets the product requirements. Maintain an appropriate qualification and functional-test plan alongside the manufacturing acceptance plan. Treat changes to materials or critical processes as inputs to that review.

Example: evaluating a supplier response

If a quotation says Class 3 available, ask which standard and revision are included, whether the submitted geometry has been reviewed, what reports are supplied and which requirements are excluded. A specific response can be compared with the drawing. A general quality statement cannot close those questions.

Design review checklist

  • Specify the document, edition, class and applicable addenda.
  • Approve the actual construction and any exceptions.
  • Define lot evidence and change-control responsibilities.
  • Keep product qualification separate from workmanship acceptance.
