Embedding a component changes where it is formed or placed and when it can be inspected. The potential benefits in space and interconnect length must be weighed against fabrication complexity, tolerance, test access and repair options. Begin with a specific circuit need rather than embedding parts simply because the technology is available.
Identify the embedded technology
Distinguish patterned resistive material, embedded capacitive structures and discrete components placed within a board construction. These approaches have different data and process needs. For example, OhmegaPly uses a resistive material integrated with copper foil to form PCB resistors; its supplier provides dedicated design and processing guidance.
Define electrical behavior over use conditions
Specify nominal value, tolerance, power or voltage conditions, temperature behavior and any frequency-dependent requirement. Include process variation in the circuit analysis. A surface-mounted component model should not automatically be reused for a physically different embedded structure.
Make fabrication data unambiguous
Identify the embedded layer, component geometry, terminals and connection scheme. Agree the file formats and drawing conventions with the manufacturer. Ensure that the electrical netlist, layer artwork and inspection plan describe the same structure.
Plan test and lifecycle control
Decide which checks occur before the structure becomes inaccessible and which can be performed on the finished board. Define acceptance and traceability. Review the consequences of a failed embedded part, since replacement may require replacing the board rather than ordinary component rework.
Example: moving termination resistors inside the board
Compare the surface and embedded options using the required resistance tolerance, power, connection parasitics, area and test method. Include manufacturing variation and the cost of a board-level failure. The decision should follow the complete channel and production analysis, not the reduction in visible component count alone.
Design review checklist
- Identify the exact embedded material or component process.
- Specify value, tolerance and operating limits.
- Approve layer data and inspection stages.
- Document test access, repair implications and approved alternatives.
