Method and units
Estimated channels per routing layer = floor(width/pitch × utilization). The required signal-layer count rounds the required channels up to that capacity.
Model limits
A simple routing-capacity model only. BGA escape, blocked channels, differential pairs, return planes, power distribution and mechanical balance can require more layers than this estimate.
