PCB DFM and DFA Release Handbook

Use a structured design-for-manufacturing and assembly review before releasing a PCB project.

Review the data package first

Verify revision, board outline, units, layer order and file completeness. Open the generated outputs independently of the CAD project. Resolve contradictory notes before starting detailed feature checks.

Review fabrication constraints

Check the proposed construction against confirmed production rules for traces, spacing, holes, vias, copper and finished thickness. Pay particular attention to special materials, multiple lamination cycles and features near the board edge.

Review assembly constraints

Validate footprints against manufacturer drawings, mark polarity clearly and reconcile the BOM with population options. Include placement origin/rotation conventions and any component handling restrictions.

Review test and handling

Plan fiducials, supports, panel separation and test access. Clarify which inspections and functional checks will be performed, how failures are handled and what records are required.

Approve a controlled release

Each unresolved issue should have an owner. Record approved changes and issue one coherent file package. Preserve the previous baseline so later failures or repeat orders can be traced to the correct build configuration.
