Plan the manufacturing route
RF and microwave boards require the physical interconnect to be treated as part of the circuit. Material properties, conductor geometry, surface roughness and launch structures can all influence performance. A material name alone does not define the RF behavior of the finished assembly.
Specify material properties in context
Use dielectric data at relevant frequency and test conditions. Consider loss, moisture behavior, thickness tolerance and thermal expansion together rather than selecting solely by nominal dielectric constant.
Coordinate controlled impedance
Trace width, copper thickness, dielectric spacing and solder mask affect the transmission structure. State the impedance targets and tolerances, then approve the manufacturer’s proposed geometry and stack-up.
Include the real measurement interface
Connector launches, transitions and calibration structures influence measured results. Define whether acceptance covers bare-board impedance, assembled RF response or both.
Before you request a quote
- Identify the operating frequency range and loss requirements.
- Specify approved material substitutions explicitly.
- Define connector launch and via-transition details.
- Agree test coupons, calibration and report requirements.
For a build-specific review, provide the actual revision, quantity and delivery requirement. Manufacturing limits, applicable certifications and lead time must be confirmed in the written quotation.
