PCB Mechanical Features: Routing, Slots and Edges

Specify PCB outlines, cutouts, slots, scoring, bevels and edge features with clear datums and finished dimensions.

Mechanical processing turns a manufactured panel into boards with the required outline and features. Routing, drilling, scoring and beveling have different capabilities and constraints. Define the finished geometry and its function so the fabricator can propose an appropriate process.

Make the outline authoritative

Use one closed, unambiguous board outline and identify internal cutouts. Define units and datums. If a drawing and data file both describe the outline, ensure they agree and state which controls if a discrepancy is discovered.

Specify holes and slots completely

Identify plated and non-plated features, finished dimensions and tolerances. Review slot-end geometry and internal corners against the available tooling. A mechanical slot in a drawing should not be left for the fabricator to interpret as either a plated electrical feature or a clearance cutout.

Review panel separation and edge quality

Agree routed tabs, scoring or another separation method with both fabrication and assembly. Consider component proximity, required edge condition and the forces used during depanelization. A board that fits before separation may still need its residual tabs or roughness controlled.

Coordinate special edge features

Gold fingers, bevels, castellations and edge plating interact with copper placement and process sequence. Identify the affected regions and finished requirements. Check enclosure and connector fit using the expected tolerances rather than nominal dimensions alone.

Release checklist

  • Use one outline and consistent datums.
  • Define plating, dimensions and tolerances for each feature.
  • Review panel separation with assembly access.
  • Inspect special edges against mating requirements.
