KiCad 10 Manufacturing Output Review Guide

Prepare and check KiCad 10 fabrication files, drill data, placement information and release records.

Use this guide when the project is released from KiCad 10. Record the exact application and library baseline, then agree the output format with the fabricator and assembler. Supporting an export format in CAD does not establish that every downstream provider uses the same import workflow.

Synchronize and review the design

Confirm that the board, schematic and intended component population agree. Review changed footprints and mechanical constraints before generating outputs. Preserve the approval of any design exceptions, especially after migrating a project from another major version.

Refresh copper and check the result

The KiCad 10 manual emphasizes that zone fills must be current before generating outputs. Run the relevant checks after the final edit and examine the resulting copper. An export made before the last zone update can fail to represent the design you intended to release.

Choose the agreed fabrication outputs

KiCad 10 documents plotting, drill files, IPC-2581, ODB++ and component-position outputs. Select the formats actually agreed with the receiving supplier. Review layer names, drill interpretation and placement conventions in the exported package rather than relying on file extensions alone.

Package assembly and test requirements

Provide the exact BOM, fitted variants, polarity drawing, programming instructions and required tests. Identify firmware and test-program revisions where applicable. Add the approved stack-up and any special fabrication notes so the manufacturer does not have to extract design intent from the CAD file.

Example: migrating a repeat-order design

Export the migrated project and compare it with the previously approved manufacturing package. Investigate differences in copper, mask, holes, footprints and placement data. Separate intentional design changes from output-setting changes before authorizing a repeat order under the new baseline.

Design review checklist

  • Record the KiCad 10 baseline and migration review.
  • Refresh zones and review final rule checks.
  • Confirm output formats with the actual suppliers.
  • Compare generated data and release all files at one revision.
