KiCad PCB Design and Manufacturing Workflow

Organize a KiCad project from schematic and footprint review to checked manufacturing and assembly outputs.

A successful KiCad release combines the CAD design with a clear manufacturing package. Plan the board rules and library control early, then review the exported files as an independent deliverable. The workflow below emphasizes decisions that remain important across versions; use the manual for your installed version for exact controls.

Establish the project baseline

Store the schematic, board, project settings and required libraries together under a controlled revision. Record the KiCad version used for release. If a library changes, review the affected symbol or footprint rather than assuming the update is only cosmetic.

Verify parts before layout

Match each symbol pin and footprint pad to the exact orderable part. Check package dimensions, polarity, exposed pads and connector numbering. A schematic that is electrically connected can still produce the wrong physical assembly when the symbol-to-footprint mapping is incorrect.

Set rules around the chosen construction

Enter the manufacturing constraints and organize nets with suitable routing rules. Review stack-up, current paths and critical interfaces before detailed routing. CAD checks are useful only to the extent that the configured rules represent the intended board and product.

Review outputs as manufacturing data

Reconcile the fabrication files, drill information, BOM, placement data and drawings. Open the exported board data in a viewer and inspect layer order, outline, holes and mask. Keep a release manifest so the assembly team receives one coherent revision.

Example: a substituted connector

When purchasing proposes a different connector, compare both pin mapping and mechanical geometry. Update the controlled schematic and footprint if the alternate is approved, regenerate all affected outputs and review the new assembly drawing. Editing only the BOM can leave the CAD and manufacturing package inconsistent.

Design review checklist

  • Record the software and library baseline.
  • Verify symbol-to-footprint mapping.
  • Close design-rule findings and approved exceptions.
  • Inspect exports and release one coordinated package.
