PCB Design Revision and Change Control

Manage circuit, component and layout changes without losing the manufacturing release baseline.

Define the reason for change

Link each revision to a test finding, component issue or updated requirement. Identify whether the change affects function, mechanics, manufacturing or qualification so the correct reviewers can assess it.

Review the connected files

A component substitution may require schematic, footprint, BOM, placement and firmware changes. Check all affected outputs and remove superseded manufacturing files from the release package.

Release with a change record

Keep the previous baseline recoverable and list approved changes, open questions and required verification. Confirm whether purchased parts, tooling or work in progress are affected before authorizing production.

Prepare the review package

  • Current released revision
  • Requested changes and engineering rationale
  • Affected inventory and tooling
  • Updated verification and release record
